Cleaning & Prevention

Maintaining your teeth and gums is the foundation for a beautiful healthy smile. Dr. Beckel and Dr. Robbins have created a practice where their licensed and highly experienced dental hygienists provide a comprehensive approach to overall dental health. Blending innovative technology and a variety of proven services, our hygienists are able to provide unparalleled patient care in a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. Below is a list of the cleaning and prevention services our hygienists perform:

Examination of diagnostic radiographs (x-rays): Radiographs are crucial to detecting decay, tumors, cysts and bone loss. Our office utilizes digital radiographs, which are faster, more comfortable and release a much lower dose of radiation.

Removal of calculus (tartar): Calculus is hardened deposits that form above and below the gum line. Calculus cannot be removed with regular brushing and requires special dental instruments.

Removal of plaque: Plaque is a sticky biofilm deposit that covers the teeth. It is composed of bacteria, saliva and food debris.

Teeth Polishing: Once the hygienist has removed the majority of calculus and plaque from the teeth, a hand-piece and Prophylaxis (Prophy) paste is used to remove any additional stains or plaque. This process also helps to polish the teeth, giving them a shiny clean look and feel.

Oral Cancer Screening: The doctors and hygienists check thoroughly for any signs of oral cancer on the gum tissue, tongue, lips, cheeks, throat tissue, face and neck area. Your hygienist will be looking for lumps, swelling, discolorations, ulcerations, or any abnormalities.

Periodontal probing: Periodontal examination and probing are used to assess the health of your gums and teeth. This screening canhelp the hygienist and doctor diagnose the gum diseases gingivitis and periodontitis. The hygienist will take measurements of the spaces between your teeth and gums and look for reddish, inflamed, bleeding, or receding gum tissues.

Topical Fluoride treatments: Fluoride is a naturally occurring element that strengthens teeth and helps prevent tooth decay. Fluoride has many positive effects on the teeth. It can help build resistance to acid, protect against sensitivity and strengthen enamel. Your hygienist may recommend a fluoride rinse or varnish during your cleaning visit.

Periodontal therapy and maintenance: Periodontal disease is a chronic condition, which can be progressive without regular follow-up care. Our hygienists are all experienced periodontal therapists and will use the latest nonsurgical techniques to treat and prevent periodontal disease. Ask your hygienist about early warning signs of periodontitis and prevention.

Sealants: A sealant is a clear, hard protective coating, which is placed over the chewing surface of the teeth to help protect and prevent cavities. Typically sealants are placed on molars and premolars of children, but can also be used on adults.

It is recommended that patients are seen for a dental cleaning at least two to four times a year, depending on overall oral health. Our goal is to provide each of our patients with a superior level of care and the most thorough treatment.
